Pt. with infected joint, had joint washout and now will be on several weeks abx. Picc has been ordered.. is it a protocol to draw blood cultures first before placing Picc line?
No. There is no reason for blood cultures simply because any CVAD is being inserted. There are no guidelines or studies supporting the risk of catheter colonization and one small retrospective study showing that Staph aureus bactemia did not cause PICC related BSI.
