A nurse in my facility thinks that declotting a picc line is basic nursing and does not feel that I should be teaching then doing a check off for competency. I disagreed with her and insisted that there be a delotting competency validation checklist if they want to declot piccs. Opinions please???
See the 2011 INS Standards of Practice, page S76, Catheter Clearance: Occluded Central Vascular Access Devices and Standard 6, page S11 Competence and Competency Validation. So you should have documented competency in this procedure. It is high-risk and hopefully low volume, which meets the criteria for competency validation. Lynn
