Disinfecting the injection cap

IF the nurse is giving several syringe medications through an injection cap in succession and has completed the 15 second scrub with alcohol and allowed to dry, do you require the nurse to scrub the hub between each syringe if the cap is not "contaminated" between each syringe?

The INS Infusion Nursing An

The INS Infusion Nursing An Evidence-Based Approach reecommends disinfecting the injection cap prior to each access.  (page 396, chapter 20).  I instruct my nurses and patients to do this with a new alcohol prep before each access.

Our policy is to scrub hub

Our policy is to scrub hub for 15 seconds before each and every entry into the hub.  The hope with the 15 seconds is that they will do it for 7-10 seconds, rather than just a swipe across the top.

Each time a needleless

Each time a needleless connector is entered, it should be scrubbed. If using SASH, this would be 4 scrubs with 4 different alcohol pads. Lynn
