Blood Draws From PIVs
Does anyone know of any evidence based information regarding the drawing of blood from peripheral saline locks?

When we revised the current

When we revised the current INS standards of practice ~2005, we looked at all the data and came up with the current standard. A PIV can be used for obtaining a blood sample when it is first inserted and when it has been inserted strictly for the purpose of drawing blood samples over a short term such as repeated sampling over 48 hours.Catheters used for sampling should not be used for infusion. This standard has a long list of references on page 72 of the document.
