HELLO, I KNOW THIS SOUNDS SILLY, BUT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR AN ARTICLE THAT EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SELDINGER AND MODIFIED SELDINGER TECHNIQUES.

ALL I HAVE READ, IN DIFFERENT ARTICLES, SEEM TO BE EXPLAINING THE SAME PROCEDURE FOR EACH TECHNIQUE.

WHAT IS THE "MODIFICATION" THAT DIFFERENTIATES THE TWO TECHNIQUES?

ONE OF OUR INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGIST IS ASKING ABOUT THIS AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE I GIVE THE RIGHT ANSWER......SOON.....AS IN TODAY!!!!

Seldinger - finder needle to

Seldinger - finder needle to make venipuncture, guidewire advanced through the needle and needle removed, vessel dilator introduced over wire and removed, skin nick may or may not be done, catheter is then driven over the wire to the desired tip location, guidewire is removed from catheter hub.

Modified seldinger - finder needle to make venipuncture, guidewire (usually shorter than for seldinger procedure) advanced through needle and needle removed, skin nick, combination vessel dialtor and peelaway sheath introduced over wire, dilator and wire removed, catheter advanced through the peelaway sheath.  Catheter already has a stylet wire loaded inside its lumen and cannot be driven over the guidewire.

Guidewires used for each technique are NOT interchangeable. An MST guidewire can not be used for driving the catheter over it as the design is different from the true seldinger guidewire, which is longer and has different safety features.
